MCDCC Nominates Mary Kiraly for Board of Elections Substitute Member

The Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee met on Tuesday January 13, 2009, and voted unanimously to nominate to the Governor, Mary H. Kiraly of Bethesda to be the Democratic Substitute Member of the Montgomery County Board of Elections. The Members of the Board of Elections serve a four-year term and oversee the operations of the Board.

 

The vacancy arises from the resignation of Samuel L. Statland as a Member of the Board. Rosalyn W. Pelles, the current Democratic Substitute Member becomes a regular Member creating the vacancy. Six applicants were interviewed by a committee of the MCDCC on January 12; the committee found that they were all qualified, Kiraly was found to be superior and was recommended to the full MCDCC for the position.

 

Mary Kiraly was the co-founder of the Maryland Election Integrity Coalition and served as its Administrator during the 2007 and 2008 Sessions of the Maryland Legislature. MD-EIC united the statewide chapters of national organizations supporting an accessible paper ballot/optical scan voting system: ACLU-MD, Common Cause-MD, Democracy for Maryland, Maryland PIRG, and Sierra Club-MD. Previously, Mary Kiraly was a Democratic Precinct Chair in Bethesda. She is  an exhibiting artist; holds a B.A. from Incarnate Word College in San Antonio, Texas and a Masters in International Relations from Boston University.
