About
Called America's best young mayor by Esquire
magazine, Martin O'Malley has led Baltimore
City's renewal, working tirelessly to make it a
safer and cleaner city, a city that is a better
place for children, and a city where businesses
want to invest. Martin O'Malley believes the
foundation of Baltimore's comeback begins with
public safety and a commitment to making every
neighborhood an even safer place to call home.
Under Mayor O'Malley's leadership and through
the hard work of police and neighbors,
Baltimore is leading the nation in the rate of
reduction of violent crime. And, at the same
time, Baltimore is freeing its communities of
drug use with new substance abuse facilities
and improved drug treatment funding. Martin
O'Malley is moving Baltimore government from
patronage politics to performance politics
through the use of his nationally acclaimed
CitiStat program. With a dedication to open and
transparent government and a belief that what
gets watched gets done, O'Malley is tracking
performance on a scale unprecedented in local
government. Syndicated columnists Neal Peirce
says Citistat "may represent the most
significant local government management
innovation of this decade" Martin O'Malley
promotes an economic development strategy
focused on building from the city's strengths;
focused on investing in all of Baltimore's
people; focused on improving the quality of
life for the people who live and work in the
City. He firmly believes that economic and
community development must go hand in hand.
Martin O'Malley believes the real measure of
our progress as a people is the achievements of
our children. For the first time in a
generation, schools in Baltimore are showing
significant improvement. For the past three
years, elementary school students have posted
higher scores in reading, language arts, and
mathematics at every grade level. Thanks in
large part to the City's lobbying at the state
level, Baltimore schools have received an
unprecedented 37% increase in per capita
funding over these last few years. Martin
O'Malley is an attorney. He received his B.A.
from the Catholic University of America and his
law degree from the University of Maryland. He
served as an Assistant State's Attorney for the
City of Baltimore from 1988 to 1990. In 1991 he
was elected to the City Council representing
the 3rd District. He served as Chairman of the
Legislative Investigations Committee and
Chairman of the Taxation and Finance Committee.
He and his wife, Catherine Curran O'Malley,
live in Northeast Baltimore with their
daughters, Grace and Tara, and sons William and
Jack. They are members of St. Francis of Assisi
Catholic Church.
