Bring Facts to Maryland’s Talk Radio

Right-wing talk radio may have failed in efforts to prop up Republicans in Annapolis and Congress but it's still there, still right-wing and still cheerleading their political cause. And, don't forget, Bush is still the President. You know the issues. You have the facts. You have something to say. Call the talk shows and make sure you're voice is heard.

How the Truth Squad Works:

After you sign up for the Talk Radio Truth Squad, we will send you email notices when we know in advance that the discussion on a particular show will be especially important, because of the guest or the subject. And often we'll help with some facts that you can use to counter the opposing message. Give it a try! We think it will help you be more effective in putting the Democratic message across!

Shows and Times:

WBAL Radio AM 1090

The "C-4" Show - Weekdays, 12noon to 3:00pm -  Senator Clarence Mitchell IV is no longer a Democrat. He now takes his talking points from the Maryland Republican Party. But, that doesn't mean he doesn't hold some Democratic views and express them with passion. No fan of Bush - old fan of some former state GOP officials. He'll hear what you have to say and disagree with respect for your position.

Call-in number: 410-467-WBAL or toll free 800-767-WBAL.
E-mail: c4@wbal.com

The Ron Smith Show - Weekdays, 3pm to 6pm - An easy going call. He knows his stuff but respects other views most of the time. Mondays at 5pm Ron is joined by "Yellow Dog Democrat" Frank DiFilippo to talk about politics. Ron is a conservative libertarian. He'll listen and return the respect you give him. Ron is topical and he reads his e-mails.

Call-in number: 410-467-WBAL or toll free 800-767-WBAL.
E-mail: rsmith@wbal.com

The Ehrlichs - Saturdays, 9am to 11am - Bob, who is "Fresh out of office..." as the WBAL website says, is joined by his lovely and intelligent wife Kendel. When they get past the "so sorry" phone calls from supporters, they go on the partisan political attack and they're bitter about it. Two lawyers focused on one career in public life. Bob is likely to cut-off hard questions - why would he start answering them now that he actually controls all the audio buttons. Ask the hard questions. Have some fun. This might be interesting and, from time to time, make some news.

Call-in number: 410-467-WBAL or toll free 800-767-WBAL.
E-mail: ehrlichs@wbal.com

Bruce Elliott - Saturdays, 5am to 9am.  No matter what the facts or news of the day are, Bruce can always be counted on to spin for his beloved Republican Establishment. Now buried deep on Saturday mornings and probably to be heard elsewhere as a vacation fill-in, Bruce will attack any opposing view with venom whether you're nice or not. It's almost personal. Tread lightly and carry the facts with you. If there is an attack line out there, he'll use it to appear "loyal" and worthy. He knows what Bush/Cheney/Rove did to those wayward U.S. Attorneys, he just won't admit it.

Call-in number: 410-467-WBAL or toll free 800-767-WBAL.

WHFS Radio FM 105.7

Ed Norris, Weekdays, 10am – 3pm     The new top radio talk show in Baltimore, so the promo says. He’s a former Baltimore police commissioner, state police superintendent under Ehrlich, ex-convict, Republican and now a talker. He’s a big Ehrlich fan and believes the GOP hype but doesn’t fill his show will local issues all the time. He’s pushing a “populist” style law-and-order message to a young audience. He’ll hear you and he’ll respect your opinion so, give it to him.

Call-in number:  Listen to the broadcast, they apparently don't know how to put it on their web site

Tom Marr , Weekdays,  9am-12noon   Tom sounds like an angry guy much of the time and he just might throw you off the air if he doesn't like what you're saying but, he's passionate about his beliefs. He believes in Republicans, apple pie and Republicans. Approach with caution but a caller who gives respect usually gets it in return. Give it a shot. He's not as mean as he lets on.

Talk Radio Tips:

Getting Ready: Prepare yourself. Listen to the host before you ever call. Get a feel for his style and demeanor. Know what you're going to say. Make some notes on paper (facts, figures, related issues, key words). Know the subject well. Stick with what you know. Anticipate what the "attack" questions or challenges to your views will be and prepare for them.

Calling: Sometimes getting past a busy signal is hard. Be persistent. Use your redial. Once you're in and on hold waiting to go on the air it may take a while to get on the air. Just be prepared for it. Use the time to listen to the show over the phone (always turn down your radio) and make notes.

The Producer/Screener: The friendly man or woman who answers the phone first will want your name and the area or city where you're from. They will ask you what your topic is. Sometimes they will ask which "side" you're on. Just tell them. Be friendly, open and lively. If you're asked a question about your topic, just answer it.

The Call: Connect with the host in a friendly way. Prepare to be questioned. Always be nice, respectful and cordial. Gracious gets gracious in return. An angry caller is out of control and can't deliver a great message. Bring something new to the show - facts, opinion, and viewpoint. Be lively and passionate but avoid going ballistic.
