What is the Maryland Democratic Party Trustees Program?

The Trustees Program is a major source of funding for the Maryland Democratic Party and has been since its inception in 1995.   It helps to finance the Party’s infrastructure, and to elect Democrats statewide.

Who are the Trustees?

The Trustees are some of the Party’s most devoted financial supporters. They are also recognized as some of Maryland’s most successful and well respected individuals and leaders of private companies, corporations, and unions. Our current State Chair, Michael Cryor, and past Chairs Terry Lierman and Wayne Rogers were Trustees, as was Maryland’s own Susie Turnbull, Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee.

How to become a Trustee?

Trustees agree to make annual contributions to the Party starting at $10,000.    While state and federal campaign laws dictate funding limits, Party staff officials are eager to work with individuals, companies, unions and PACs to ensure compliance with each year and each election cycle.

Why are Trustees so important?

The investments made by Trustees to the Maryland Democratic Party benefit every Democratic incumbent, candidate and activist.  From the grassroots neighborhood leader programs, the latest in political technologies, to voter registration and targeted research and training, Trustee membership helps to ensure that Maryland Democrats and their Party are fully prepared to retain and acquire a strong, statewide Democratic presence.

Vital to the ongoing strength of the party is training.   In 2008, the Party has laid the foundation for the formation of a training institute to perpetuate the skill sets and experiences essential to political competence and competitiveness statewide.  Eventually, the Training Institute will produce a new generation of Party advocates, activists and candidates skilled in the ways of modern campaigning.  The training will be made available in different communities around the state, year round.

When do Trustees meet?

Trustees meet several times a year with the Maryland Democratic Party leadership, including virtually all our federal and statewide executive, legislative and appointed leaders. As well, Trustees also enjoy frequent opportunities to meet with County and City officials who impact the course of the direction of our state.
