Bio

James J. Stakem was elected to the Office of Allegany County Commissioner in 1998. He recently retired from the Allegany County Public School System after spending 36 years teaching American History, Psychology and Government. During the past 34 years, he also taught Psychology on a part-time basis at Allegany Community College in Cumberland. He has recently picked up a 20th Century World History Class.

Mr. Stakem received a B.S. in l963 and an M.Ed. in l967 from Frostburg State College (now Frostburg University). He is a long-time member of the Fraternal Order of Police, the Moose Lodge, the Eagles, the Knights of Columbus, and the Elks. He has held coaching positions for basketball and various other sports teams in the County.

As a Commissioner, Mr. Stakem serves on the Human Resources Development Commission, the Maryland Association of Counties Legislative Committee, the MACo Education Subcommittee, Tri-County Council, the Substance Abuse Task Force, the Western Maryland Economic Development Strategies Task Force, the Governor's Flood Mitigation Task Force, the Rocky Gap Foundation, the Cumberland Summer Theater Committee, and Seniors and Law Enforcement Together.

Mr. Stakem and his wife Joann live in Frostburg. They have three grown children and six grandchildren.
