Louisiana Democratic Party Chair Christopher Whittington Statement after President Obama’s Health Care Reform Town Hall Meeting

Baton Rouge, Louisiana —Yesterday, President Obama held a town hall meeting in Annandale, Virginia to talk to citizens about their struggles with the health care system and what we need to do to ensure that every American has access to quality, affordable health care. After the town hall meeting, Louisiana Democratic Party Chair Christopher Whittington issued the following statement in support of President Obama’s efforts:

“The stories we heard in yesterday’s town hall serve as yet another reminder that our health care system is broken and we must act now to fix it. There are 45 million uninsured Americans and millions more who are underinsured and struggle daily with skyrocketing premiums and unmanageable health care costs. 20.2 percent of Louisianans alone lack health insurance. These numbers are completely unacceptable.

But the health care debate isn’t about some abstract legislation in Washington, it’s about our friends, neighbors and family who are struggling to pay for prescriptions and get the medical care they need. That’s why I support the President’s call for health care reform that lowers costs, provides choice of physician and ensures access to quality, affordable health care for all Americans.

This isn’t a problem that developed overnight, and it’s not going to be easy to fix. The President and his allies in Congress are committed to enacting reform this year, and with the strong support of hard working Americans from all walks of life, they can make it happen. Louisiana citizens must continue to stand with the President on this critical issue and make their stories heard."
