CAN JINDAL DO THE RIGHT THING?

Vote to Override SCHIP Veto and Final Debate Are Both Priorities in Race for Governor

BATON ROUGE – The voters of Louisiana are anxiously awaiting the appearance of Bobby Jindal at the third and final debate in which he has committed but it’s doubtful he’ll do the right thing and show up, according to Louisiana Democratic Party Chairman Chris Whittington.

Congress has scheduled a vote to override Bush’s veto on a bill to expand the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) for Oct. 18, the same day as the debate. Jindal, who has now missed 149 out of 152 roll call votes since Aug. 4, has said he protests Bush’s veto but isn’t sure if he’ll be in Washington to vote. The vote is scheduled to occur before noon leaving Jindal enough time to return to Louisiana for the debate, according to Whittington.

“If the vote comes early in the day, Jindal can return to Louisiana in time for the debate. He has been jetting around the state for months on the campaign trail, there is no reason he can’t do the right thing and attend both,” Whittington said.

“Voters should see that Jindal rarely does the right thing if it interferes with his personal gain. Jindal’s lengthy record of missing votes in the House rivals that of over a dozen forums/debates he has avoided. The state needs a leader who will show up, face challenges and prove to voters that the needs of Louisiana come first – not his own political gain. Jindal’s record of putting selfish gain over selfless work for others is proof he can’t lead Louisiana forward.”
