Letters to the Editor (published) > Dangerous Nonsense

December 2007 -- The latest poll issued by Survey USA indicates only 12% of Kentuckians believe the issue of domestic-partner benefits should be a top priority for lawmakers.

“Every Kentuckians knows when a bill is filed to stop universities from offering domestic-partner benefits, it is actually a bill to discriminate against a specific group of people – gays,” stated Kentucky Equality Federation President Jordan Palmer. “Even the question of denying them is homophobic.”

Though the poll is divided on offering domestic-partner benefits, 11% of those polled are still undecided.

According to statements by Representative Richard Henderson however, the people of Montgomery, Powell and Wolfe counties are obsessed with denying partner benefits at a rate far beyond the people of the rest of the Commonwealth.

Henderson, specifically, was quoted in the Lexington Herald-Leader as saying he received between "1,200 and 1,500 calls" from his constituents urging him to take action. "I live in an ultraconservative district with 150 churches," Henderson said. "Between 1,200 and 1,500 of my constituents have called, not requesting but directing me to do this."

No other lawmaker has reported their telephones being overwhelmed in such a manner.

With more than 560,000 of Kentucky’s 4,173,405 citizens living without health insurance, taking coverage out of anyone’s reach indicates health insurance is only a commodity for the rich.
