Canvasser

The Iowa Democratic Party is accepting applications for the part-time paid position of Canvasser. The Canvasser job description should include the following staff functions and is a temporary position through the end of the election.

  • Contacting registered voters by canvassing door-to-door in assigned regions of Iowa
  • Recruiting volunteers in assigned counties
  • Assisting in campaign activities as assigned
Application Requirements

  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills required
  • Computer skills required
  • Extensive travel within Iowa is required
  • U.S. citizenship desirable
  • Active voting status desirable
  • Reliable transportation required

Communications Intern

The Iowa Democratic Party seeks an unpaid, summer intern to help with research, writing, and special projects.  Duties will include assisting in the maintenance of IDP Party web site, monitoring media (print, radio and television), writing action alerts, and conducting research. 

Qualified interns will have excellent writing and research skills, communication skills, basic knowledge of Microsoft software (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook), organizational skills, and phone skills.  Political Science, Journalism, and Mass Communications students are encouraged to apply.

Field Organizer

The Iowa Democratic Party is accepting applications for the position of Field Organizer. The Field Organizer's job description includes the following staff functions:

  • Recruiting and training volunteers and precinct captains
  • Managing volunteers through activities such as phone banking and
    canvassing
  • Coordinating election activities with candidates, legislative staff, and
    political committees, unions, and canvassers
  • Attending local Central Committee Meetings
  • Maintaining relationships with County Chairs and serving as their primary
    point of contact with the Iowa Democratic Party
  • Staffing political events
  • Keeping a calendar of county events
  • Implementing the 2008 Coordinated Campaign and GOTV Plan
  • Executing an effective Election-Day GOTV operation
  • Representing the Iowa Democratic Party at community events and local
    Democratic meetings and trainings

Application Requirements



  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills required
  • Previous organizing experience with a campaign, state party, membership
    organization, or non-profit is desirable
