Vice Chair Carol Porch

Hello, Fellow Democrats!

I’m Carol Porch from Iowa City, the Vice Chair of the Disability Caucus. I’ve been Family to Family Coordinator for the NAMI IOWA, National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, for the past six years.  I recruit and train a volunteer staff to teach a psycho-education program for families with a mentally ill family member. Other programs I work with at NAMI IOWA include Peer to Peer Mentor Training, NAMI Support Group Facilitator Trainer, and Provider Education.

I graduated from Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, Missouri and attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City. I’ve been employed by Iowa Social and Economic Development and the City of Iowa City Department of Housing. I have served as board member and President for Iowa Protection and Advocacy.

I was stirred to involvement in politics because of my experience with mental illness disabilities issues including mental illness treatment for children, insurance parity, and access to medication and services, as well as crisis services. I got involved after attending a state capital event where I noted that people who knew the politicians were more adept at speaking with them about their legislative needs. I’ve served as Johnson County Democrats Secretary, Second Vice Chair and First Vice Chair, and I was a paid staffer for David Osterberg's Senate campaign and Al Gore's Presidential campaign.
