ADAAG Check List


ACCESSIBILITY MADE SIMPLE

 

Introduction:  As Democrats, we ensure that our events and activities fully include all voters.  Therefore, we want to welcome voters who have disabilities.  Checking the items below is a simple way to avoid overlooking barriers which might otherwise interfere with that goal. 

 

_____There are curb ramps, which are at least a little wider than a yard and have detectable warnings, on every route than crosses a street. 

_____There are sufficient accessible parking spaces near all entrances. 

_____ They are all designated by the universal symbol of accessibility.

_____There are van-accessible parking spaces that are designated “van-accessible” and at least eight feet of vertical clearance all around them. 

_____ The number of the accessible parking spaces complies with the following:

_____At least one entrance to the building is wide and level enough for wheelchair users to pass through easily. 

_____ The doors of that entrance are electronically controlled. 

_____ At least one route between spaces where people will be has clear, level floor space which is wide enough for wheelchair users to navigate and the ground or floor surfaces are stable, firm, and slip-resistant. 

_____ There is at least one such route to the entrance.

_____ There is at least one such route for use in fire or emergency. 

_____ All walk ways have approximately 7 ft. of clear head room. 

_____ There are no overhanging objects protruding into the walk ways on which people who have low vision can hit their heads. 

_____ The carpeting in each space where people will be has pile no thicker than .5 inches. 

_____The characters on the signs which label activity spaces are at least three inches high. 

_____All such signs are well-lighted.

_____ All accessible parking spaces, entrances, rest rooms, and telephones are clearly labeled with accessibility symbols. 

_____ All facilities with multiple floors have elevators available. 

_____ Elevator operation is automatic.

_____ The elevator controls are low enough that wheelchair users can easily reach them and they are marked with raised print which is at least two inches high and Braille. 

_____ The elevator signals are both audible and visible. 

_____ Wheelchair users can use the rest rooms because the routes to the rest rooms have plenty of clear and level floor space. 

_____ The rest rooms have enough clear and level floor space so that wheelchair users can turn around and navigate.  (app. 2 yards)

_____ At least some of the toilets in each of the rest rooms are high enough from the floor to be comfortable for use by wheelchair users.  (a little less than 2 ft. above the floor)

_____ At least some of the stalls in each of the rest rooms have grab bars that are round or a similar shape and stable in their mountings on the wall. 

_____ At least some of the lavatories, soap and paper towel dispensers, etc. in each of the rest rooms are low enough that wheelchair users can reach them easily.  (a little less than 4 ft. above the floor)

_____ There are no exposed pipes under the lavatories in any of the rest rooms.

_____ At least some of the faucets in each of the rest rooms are lever, push, or electronically controlled. 

_____ All controls and operating mechanisms which people at the event may be using are low enough for wheelchair users to reach and use comfortably, and they can be operated without tight grasping, pinching, or wrist twisting. 

_____ Anything in the alarm system which is audible is also visual and anything that is visual is also audible. 

_____ There are alarms in every space where people will be. 

_____ At least some of the telephones are located where wheelchair users can easily reach them. 

_____ A TTY is available and designated.

_____Assistive listening equipment is available in any assembly area which has fixed seating. 

_____ The number of wheelchair spaces complies with the following:

The Items listed above are according to the Americans With Disabilities Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG).  They are facility specification requirements.  Below are a few recommendations which, when followed, result in the event’s being fully compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act. 

 

Significant program materials are available in alternate formats

A sign-language interpreter is provided for the entire program.

Reserved seating is provided in the front for attendees who have poor hearing and vision.

Screens and projected materials are large.

Personnel are available to provide assistance upon request.
