FIGHT FOR AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE RALLY

Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009

10 a.m. Press conference steps  of Old Capitol

11 a.m. to 6 p.m. sign waving by Monroe Street by Old Capitol

6 p.m. candlelight vigil on steps of Old Capitol

Message:

As Republicans and insurance companies try to kill health reform through scare tactics and politics as usual, local health care reform supporters will mount a 24-hour blitz of urging Sens. Bill Nelson and George LeMieux  to pass real health care reform now.  Reform that gives every American the choice of quality health insurance they can afford, including the choice of a public health insurance option.  Reform that holds insurance companies accountable and protects people from insurance abuses like annual caps on coverage and unfair denials coverage because of pre-existing conditions.  Reform that puts healthcare decisions back in the hands of patients and doctors. Reform that protects and improves the financial health of Medicare.  And reform that doesn’t add an additional burden to working families by taxing health insurance benefits.

During the “Get It Done” rally supporters will urge Sens. Bill Nelson and George LeMieux to give Americans the vote they deserve – a vote for real health insurance reform that guarantees affordable coverage that businesses and families can count on.

FYI: We regret to inform you that VOICE's Dec. 12th civic educational event, "How the legislative process works and the ordinary citizen's role in it," has been cancelled because of unforseen personal/familial commitments that Chris Turner needs to attend to on that day.

We will reschedule this event after the New Year and after the passage of the health care reform legislation, so that we can use such legislation as a case study for Chris' presentation on how the legislative process works.  More details will be forthcoming after the New Year.

Thanks to everyone who had expressed interest in attending the event and/or who had offered to help make it a success! Please save the date and share with your networks, as appropriate:

Getting Our Message Out

DEC will be exploring the use of a free internet-based service called, Blog Talk Radio. We would host our own radio show that has the capability to interview people from anywhere with the use of cell phones and the program allow call-ins. All shows are archived and could be played back anytime. We will need people with interviewer/reporter skills to execute effectively. We are planning a meeting with a good friend who has had a long running and successful show for many years. I've asked him to come and instruct us how to use the program effectively.

Just a few things we could accomplish:

*Interview  candidates, public officials, DEC leaders, and members

*Showcase DEC activities like a live remote

If you would like to participate or for more information, please contact Publicity Chair, Dianne Cox at dwmscox@gmail.com

'Show me the money!'

Rightly or wrongly, money has become a key ingredient in waging successful election campaigns.

And the Leon County DEC got an early start in our efforts to help

2009 Session: Our Democrats did us proud

Its a sad commentary on the state of Florida politics when you have to measure success by how effective legislators are at damage control. But thats perhaps the best way to assess the 2009 Legislative Session. And DEC members can be proud of how Democrats in the Leon County delegation performed.

We asked our representatives and senator how they saw the Session unfold and their views on the role of Democratic activists in supporting their efforts to advocate for their constituents and all Floridians. Click on Session Wrap to see how they responded.

Obama's bold choice for the Supreme Court

If confirmed, the U.S. Supreme Court will soon be graced with its first ever Hispanic Justice with President Obama's nomination of Judge Sonia Sotormayor   to fill a vacancy to be left with the announced retirement of Justice David Souter.  Click Sonia to watch the president explain his choice.

Health Care Reform: "Get 'er done!"

It's time to pull together to force Congress to pass legislation to forge the kind of health care reform Americans want and need.

Please click on WHY NOW to watch a message from President Obama. Or click on WE WANT A PUBLIC OPTION to send a message at message to Sens. Nelson and Martinez adding your support to this important requirement of any reform.

Human Rights: Leon County moves forward

On July 14, the Leon County Commission  unanimously voted to create a new Human Relations Committee which will advise commissioners on a range of issues, including  concerns of the Capital City Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Allies Democratic Caucus.

Click on SAY THANKS to find out more about this initiative for directions on how to easily add your thanks to each commissioner for this action.

Redistricting: Say NO! to gerrymandering

A campaign to change the corrupt system politicians use to maintain their power is gaining momentum but it's important to keep up the pressure. FairDistrictsFlorida.org must collect 1.6 million signed petitions to get an initiative on next year's ballot to change the current system of a post-U.S. Census redrawing of districts to the advantage of the party in power -- currently the Republicans.

A local nonpartisan group that originated with our our DEC has collected some 600 petitions on its own. Click on LeonFairDistrictsLeon to get a petition if you haven't already signed one or to volunteer to help collect more signatures.

Click on on Make a Donation is you want help the state organization get its job done. It costs 10 cents to file each petition. Click on Redistricting to find out more about what at stake with this crucial issue.
