With this
week’s testimony of General David Patreus and
Ambassador Ryan Crocker before Congress, Ed
Fallon is hoping it will spark discussion about
the Iraq war.
The Democratic candidate for the Third Congressional District, said he wants the testimony before Congress to spur an open discourse between himself and his opponent, incumbent Congressman Leonard Boswell.
Fallon also pointed to Boswell’s original vote in support of the resolution to authorize military force in Iraq in 2002.

“A lot of
people voted for the original resolution,”
Fallon said in a phone interview Tuesday
afternoon. “By 2004, everyone knew there were
no weapons of mass destruction there but for
two years (Boswell) continued to fund a war
that is premised on a lie. I want to know why
he has continued to support the
war.”
Boswell released a statement on the Petraeus and Crocker testimony saying he is asking for an “orderly withdrawal of troops.”
“After two days of testimony, it’s clear that the Administration still has no end game. The purpose of the surge was to move towards a political reconciliation, but this still has not occurred It’s unfortunate that our brave young men and women in uniform are being put at risk, without any clear strategy,” Boswell stated in a release.

“I, along with
others have repeatedly asked for their ‘plan’
for an orderly withdrawal of our troops, but
none exists, nor does there appear to be any
strategy to do so. This Administration seems
determined to participate in what has become an
internal Iraqi civil war.”
Fallon noted that Boswell and him now agree on the need to withdrawal troops.
“I would never have supported the original resolution in 2002,” Fallon said, “and I would not have voted for a single resolution that was not attached to a timetable for withdrawal.”

Fallon said
although they agree now, he questions why it
has taken Boswell so long to come to the same
conclusion.
“My position has remained the same. Boswell agrees with me but it took him five years. Why?” he said.
Fallon said he hopes asking questions will lead to a debate between him and Boswell prior to the June 3 primary.

“I’d like to
see some debate on the issues,” he said. “I’d
welcome a debate in Jasper County.”
