Poverty

As one who has lived in poverty, I am deeply concerned about the growing ranks of America’s poor. The increasing gap between the very wealthy and those unable to meet even their basic needs is a national scandal. I was excited to see John Edwards raise this issue in his campaign for president, and to call for national action to end poverty. While government certainly can’t solve the problem on its own, there is much the U.S. Congress can do to improve the lot of those who struggle to survive in this country. Certainly, enacting a livable wage law would help. So would universal health care. I will have a lot more to say about this issue over the course of the campaign. It has been extremely important to me throughout my years of public service, and I’m interested in your input as well. |
