June 3, 2008--Leonard Boswell has served in Congress for nearly a dozen years after another dozen of service at the Iowa statehouse. Ed Fallon hopes to put an end to that in today's Democratic primary in central Iowa.

It's the only battle in the state where a sitting congressman has to beat a challenger first. In this race, the two men chose different weapons to find victory.

DES MOINES — Democratic voters in Iowa's 3rd Congressional District will have a distinct choice when they head to the polls Tuesday between veteran U.S. Rep. Leonard Boswell and former state lawmaker Ed Fallon.

As he seeks re-election to his seventh term, Boswell is touting his seniority in the House, while challenger Fallon is positioning himself as a reformer intent on changing the status quo in Washington.

The Democratic primary in Iowa's 3rd Congressional District is a stylistic clash of Leonard Boswell's centrist, rural background and Ed Fallon's self-styled progressive, urban record.

Congressman Leonard Boswell has alleged in a series of campaign mailers that Democratic primary challenger Ed Fallon's support of Ralph Nader in 2000 helped elect George W. Bush.

Fallon said repeated references to his Nader endorsement are Boswell's attempt to mask his own support for the war in Iraq.

Democratic Rep. Leonard Boswell (IA-03) is trying desperately to defend his seat from progressive Democratic challenger Ed Fallon (who worked for John Edwards in Iowa). Boswell's polling at the beginning of the year must have scared him, because he has been throwing everything he can at Fallon. The most recent sign of desperation is Boswell's direct mail, which has quickly moved from deception to obscenity.

If you want to know why Democrats don't stand up to do the right thing, look no further than the difficulty of running in a primary. There are very few credible candidates, and one of them, Ed Fallon, is getting attacked by the Iowa state Senate itself because he dared challenge a sitting Congressman, Leonard Boswell.

Here's Leonard Boswell, conservative Democrat in Iowa, criticizing his liberal primary challenger, Ed Fallon.

Fallon has said that while Boswell has performed admirably at times, he has sided too much with Bush, a Republican, and has no absolute right to his seat. Asked about this, Boswell said Fallon was unpopular among state lawmakers and at times a lone "no" vote among Democrats on issues. Boswell aides said the congressman has sided with...

Ed Fallon called in from the road the other day to talk about his Democratic primary challenge to Rep. Leonard Boswell of Des Moines, a 12-year veteran of the House.

Fallon, a former state legislator from Des Moines who lost an attempt to win the Democratic nomination for governor in 2006, said he's hard at work in advance of the June primary. He has 16 paid staff members and to date has raised about $130,000 for his campaign, he said.

JOHNSTON -- Ed Fallon argued Friday that U.S. Rep. Leonard Boswell's time is up in the 3rd District as Iowans seek a more progressive candidate who won't vote along with the status quo.

"Washington, D.C., is in desperate need of change," said Fallon, who is challenging the six-term Democrat. "People elected the Democratic Congress two years ago in the expectation of more boldness, of more vision, of more change, and it's not happening."
