Biden, Clinton Top Choices in Straw Poll

Middletown, DE - Results from the Presidential straw poll taken by the 8th/9th RD Democrats at the recent Peach Festival show that Delaware Senator Joseph Biden is the preferred Democratic choice if a primary were held today.
35% of the 185 voters participating chose Biden while 28% chose Hillary Clinton. Other candidate results in rank order were Barack Obama- 17% , John Edwards- 9% , Bill Richardson- 4% , Christopher Dodd- 2% and Dennis Kucinich- 1%. Four percent of voters indicated no preferred choice.
With the exception of Senator Biden , the results track with national polls.
In addition, voters were asked to identify the most important issues facing Delaware today. Health care , Jobs/Economy , and Social Security/elderly were the top choices. All issues are shown in order by percent of vote:
Health care 44% Environment 22%
Jobs/Economy 33% Terrorism 22%
Soc sec/elderly 28% Taxes 21%
Education 26% Infrastructure 18%
Utility Rates 13%
Write in issues included Iraq war-4% ; Immigration-2% and Funding for veterans. Voters felt all issues were important and had difficulty picking one or two.
Each participating voter received a chance to win a prize in a drawing held at the end of the day. Prize winners-all from Townsend were Celine Franck , Donna Clayton and Lou Hirt.
8th/9th District Democrats seek to encourage voter participation and provide support to Democratic candidates locally and throughout the state of Delaware. We meet monthly.
